Electrical retailer Comet has launched its first mobile site in the same week as it begins a Christmas social media campaign.
The site enables customers to reserve items to collect from the nearest store.
Robbie Tutt, web design and development manager at Comet, said the mobile site wouldn’t be transactional yet as there wasn’t the demand.
“We carried out some research and found that in the past six months more than 250,000 people had visited the Comet site from their phones, so the demand is there,” he said. “But we don’t see it as a sales channel yet, more as a research channel. There just isn’t enough evidence to show that people want to buy a TV or a washing machine on their phone.”
The retailer has also launched a competition on Twitter in the run-up to Christmas asking users to participate in an online game of pass the parcel.
Comet hopes to increase engagement by asking its followers to tweet an answer to the question ‘What do you want for Christmas?’ with the hashtag #cometparcel. The customer who tweets closest to when the music stops wins the prize.
Last week Comet also launched question-and-answer functionality that aims to increase participation on the main Comet site. Users can ask questions about products and will receive answers from both Comet staff and other customers online.
