In the digital world a social network is an online community of people who are brought together usually because they have some form of common interest, activity or characteristic. Whilst the precise features and benefits of each social network vary, they do have certain elements in common such as enabling members to create a profile, meet other members and share information or content.
There are a number of social network environments in which IFA’s should be present, including:
1) Facebook – There are over 23 million facebook users in the UK, 60% of whom are aged over 25. 50% of engaged users log in every day, spending an average of 26 minutes on the site. Facebook provides a range of mechanisms by which you can establish a presence, from creating a page or group, to building an application.
2) LinkedIn – This is an invaluable resource for connecting with a local network of business people and potential clients, while also providing access to advice and information on how to grow your business. It has over 3 million users in the UK and provides a number of tools with which you can promote your business.
3) Twitter – The debate rolls on as to whether Twitter is a micro-blogging service, a simple communication tool or a social network. What is clear however is that it can provide a tool by which you can connect with your network of peers, promote your views and brand, and provide customers with value added information.
4) IFA Networks - There are a number of social networks dedicated to IFAs such as IFA Life and IFA Online, while networks such as LinkedIn and Ecademy has sub groups specifically for IFAs. These networks and groups can be an invlauable source of information on everything from regulatory changes to sales techniques.
