So what can Social Media do for you and your members?
Ultimately it can bring you and your members closer together, broadening and deepening the ways in which you help your members and they help each other.
What is "Social Media" anyway? Well, that phrase covers a host of activities and tools. At its most basic social media describes the many ways people now communicate, with a focus on more recent tools.
It's different from its predecessors in the richness of media available, the number of people within easy reach and the speed that messages spread.
Most importantly, the new social media tools encourage conversations between people inside and outside organisations, crossing organisational boundaries with ease. Your members are more interested in talking to you as an individual than the organisation you run. They also want to communicate with their peers just as easily and in just as many ways as they do on services like Facebook.
For most membership organisations this involves more than just updating your website. Having conversations with your members brings a change to the way you work.
The first steps can be difficult, but as you explore the brave new world of social media you will discover just what it can achieve for your members, for you, and for your organisation.
You may enjoy it.
